How to Build a Warehouse

Blog

Why here and now?

For me, beginners and experts everywhere.

Mostly I'm doing this for myself. After many years in work, initially in manufacturing but more recently in logistics, I've learnt a lot. Often it agrees with the mainstream, but not always. I wanted one place to put down my thoughts, both technical and philosophical on the world of logistics, and in particular warehousing. Briefly, I thought of writing a book (yes I'm that old) but then realised the content would be more useful, and easier to update, on a web site. As I'm actively looking for a new role it could also act as a kind of window on my approach. I'm a strong believer that a good hiring interview has to be a two way affair. I need to learn as much as possible about my potential employer as they do about me and if it doesn't happen it won't work.

On the other hand, it isn't meant as a sales tool. I'm not looking for consulting work (although if you think that it might fit let's talk still).

I am absolutely not a technical expert in every facet of warehousing and logistics. There are some very clever people out there and you'll find links to lots of their sites and contact information on this site. But if I'm honest and say I don't know lots about everything I do think I know something about everything and what I know allows the whole process to work together and flow. "Flow" is a word you'll hear a lot about on the site as it's critical to an efficiently functioning process.

On the other hand I know a little about a lot of things, just enough to be dangerous, some might say. I've made a lot of mistakes and learnt from almost all of them and that's what I want to share. I hope that some of these lessons, tips and experiences can be useful for people just starting out in the field of logistics and warehousing. I hope that I've made the mistakes so you won't have to - you can make mistakes allof your own instead!
